Is Technology Holding Your Organisation Back?

In this article, we explore how growing technology complexity affects business performance and how leaders can determine the right response.

Technology rarely becomes a barrier overnight.

As organisations grow, expand into new markets or acquire new businesses, their technology landscape grows with them. New systems are introduced to meet immediate needs; processes evolve, and increasing volumes of data are spread across different platforms.

Each decision may make sense in isolation. Together, however, they can create a fragmented landscape that is increasingly difficult to understand and manage.

The warning signs soon become familiar. Reports produce conflicting figures. Teams spend valuable time manually reconciling data. Decisions take longer and AI ambitions are constrained by unreliable foundations.

The challenge is clarity

When these problems emerge, the natural response can be to invest in another platform or tool. But without a clear understanding of what is already in place and what is driving the underlying issues, further investment may add complexity rather than resolve it.

In many cases, the answer is not more technology. Leaders must distinguish between problems that can be addressed by using existing systems more effectively, those that require stronger data foundations or governance, and those where targeted investment would genuinely create value.

From assessment to action

Making these decisions requires an objective assessment of how effectively the organisation’s current technology and data support its needs.

A Technology and Data Assessment identifies what is working, what is holding the organisation back and where action or investment could create the greatest value. Rather than simply producing another report, it translates those findings into clear priorities and a practical roadmap for improvement.

What does a Technology and Data Assessment examine?

While every organisation is different, assessments typically focus on four key areas:

Technology Strategy and Roadmap

Understanding how well technology supports the organisation's current objectives and future ambitions, and identifying the investments and capabilities needed to support long-term growth.

Applications, Systems and Integrations

Evaluating whether key systems are fit for purpose, how effectively they work together, and where disconnected processes or duplicated effort create inefficiencies.

Data Quality, Governance and Accessibility

Assessing how data is managed, used and trusted across the organisation, while identifying opportunities to improve reporting, decision-making and operational performance.

AI Readiness, Opportunities and Governance

Exploring where AI could create value, assessing organisational readiness, and ensuring the right governance and foundations are in place to support responsible adoption.

Real Organisations, Real Outcomes

We have applied this approach with clients facing different organisational needs.

For Young Enterprise NI, an eight-week assessment mapped its current technology architecture, data and processes, resulting in evidence-based recommendations and a clear roadmap for future development. This also provided a foundation for building future business cases while recognising the organisation’s financial and resourcing constraints.

For Queer Britain Museum, the assessment recommended a centralised HR platform to replace fragmented spreadsheets, a new collections management system and improvements to reporting, cybersecurity and governance. The museum has already implemented several quick wins, helping to reduce manual work, improve data quality and build greater trust in its systems.

Start with a clearer view

Before launching your next transformation programme, or scaling AI, there is one question worth asking:

Do you fully understand the current state of your technology and data landscape?

If growth is placing new demands on your existing systems, explore our Technology and Data Assessment approach or speak to our team about identifying the barriers and prioritising the changes needed to support your organisation’s future growth.
