Driving Organisational Growth with tailored Tech and Data Insights for Queer Britain Museum

As Queer Britain Museum aims to strengthen its role as the UK’s first LGBTQ+ museum, its leadership recognised that a solid foundation in technology and data was crucial for supporting future growth. Focusing on improving connections, unlocking insights, and building scalable systems, the museum turned to Lancia Consult for expert advice. Here, Andrew Given, Chief Executive of Queer Britain Museum, shares how collaborating with Lancia Consult on a dedicated Technology and Data Assessment helped shape their digital transformation journey.

“The Lancia Consult Technology and Data Assessment has been invaluable for a small organisation such as Queer Britain Museum.”

- Andrew Given, Chief Executive of Queer Britain Museum

The Challenge

As the new Chief Executive of Queer Britain Museum, my role is to lead our organisation from its start-up phase to becoming a prominent cultural institution in the UK. Our technology and data needs were expanding, and I wanted to ensure that we were using the right tools and connecting in the right ways to generate actionable insights for our growth.

During an initial meeting with Lancia Consult, we identified our pain points and future goals. Key areas, such as HR management, volunteer coordination, and collections management, relied heavily on spreadsheets with limited automation, making it difficult to scale operations.‍

Together with the Lancia team, we worked to create a customised assessment framework. Lancia Consult then held deep discovery sessions and interviews with leadership and staff. These sessions provided a clear picture of our organisation’s current state, key challenges, and ideas for a future roadmap. As one staff member remarked, “It felt like a lovely therapy session, being able to talk through the tech issues and chat about potential solutions.”

The Solution

The final output was a report with a detailed analysis of our current setup and a personalised roadmap of recommendations. This includes a centralised HR platform to replace the existing set of fragmented spreadsheets and a new collections and curation system to support our journey to becoming an accredited museum. The roadmap also included recommendations such as improved reporting tools and dashboards for better visibility across operations, structured training to support staff, and practical steps for improving cybersecurity, governance, and documentation.

This assessment has been beneficial for Queer Britain as we continue to expand as an organisation. An outside perspective brings credibility to the need for change.

The Impact

We have already acted on several of the ‘quick wins’ outlined in the report. This has helped reduce manual work, improve data quality and reliability, and build trust in our systems. Staff are more satisfied because they see immediate changes and improvements, and feel confident that we will address all the recommendations.

The Lancia Consult Technology and Data Assessment has been invaluable for a small organisation like Queer Britain Museum. The team was not only excellent to work with but also enjoyable and friendly.
